Terrence Malick on Storyboarding

Brian M. Hall

Updated: May 3, 2020

" Well, I find it very hard to execute anything that is too

preconceived. I've never been able to ever work from storyboard

because it's hard. You always have a little bit of the feeling

you're trying to fit a square peg in a round hole.

I think it’s best to see where it’s gonna go

on the day, and you hope it will go to some places that

you've allowed to happen, but if you try to make things

happen, they start to feel presented. They start to feel as

though the action has been premeditated and was not being

presented to you, which starts to make it feel like theater,

which is wonderful in its own right, but in the movies, you

don't want it to be like theater."
